History:

Artifacts from both the Moors and Romans give evidence that the town has seen many cultures throughout the centuries. A 10th century Moorish fortress offers proof that the Moors inhabited the area in very early centuries, but the first documented proof comes in the 13th century when King Fernando III's armies launched an attack to seize the area for Christian control. As with many Spanish towns, this led to a sharp drop in population. It isn't until the 1500s that new buildings were erected, starting with a massive stone bridge built to replace the flimsy wooden one that crossed the Genil River. A few manor homes were added housing the Duke of Medinaceli's family. Following this, more people began to move to the area and the gorgeous Romanesque church was built to ensure the townspeople had a place to practice Christianity.

Site Seeing:

The famed Rock and River Blues Festival is one of the largest attractions. Every summer, music lovers flock to the Genil River Bridge where area musicians and big names converge to give a fabulous concert. Fender Guitars usually play a large part in the festivities.

In August, the annual Fosforito Flamenco Festival is held in Puente Genil. The festival celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and draws a large number of guests.

Nature lovers will enjoy the scenery and animal life found at either the Tiscar Lagoon Nature Reserve or the Cordobilla Reservoir. Bird watchers will find the large variety of species offers plenty to see.

There are a number of churches within Puente Genil. Parroquia de Nuestra Senora and Iglesia del Dulce Nombre de Jesus are the town's oldest dating back to the 16th century. La Victoria Convent and St. Francis's Convent were built during the 17th century.

Puente Genil has a warm climate and fertile soils that help ensure grapevines and olive groves thrive. Olive is pressed locally and turned into healthy olive oil. Additionally, quince grow well. Quince preserves are sold in many area shops and from resident's homes. Wine enthusiasts will want to take a bottle of locally made wine home with them.

Nightlife:

There are a number of bars where locals and tourists mingle for a cold beer or glass of wine. Those looking for busy nightclubs will find little to do in Puente Genil and may need to head to larger cities.
