Introduction:
Torremolinos is a city which is tourism oriented. A municipality on the Mediterranean’s Costa del Sol, it is situated in the western part of the city of Malaga. Malaga city is situated in the Malaga province of the autonomous region Andalucia. Before the rise in the tourism sector, starting towards the end of 1950’s, Torremolinos was a poor village with fishing as its main occupation. It was here that the first resorts of Costa del Sol were made. Having a large expatriate population that is mostly British, it attracts many British tourists. Torremolinos is a vibrant resort with outstanding sandy beaches.
History:
The Ensenada Marquis map did not show Torremolinos until 1748, although it came into existence much before. This municipality was independent in the beginning but was annexed in 1924 to Malaga. It regained its independence in 1988 (September 28th). It has a lengthy turbulent history. Designers and artists who settled here felt free to build houses and blocks according to the eccentricity of their imagination.
Site Seeing:
Torremolinos offers a wide range of plants and trees to be seen including magnolia, banana, roses, azaleas and many more. Three forests in the outskirts of the town containing barbecue facilities and fresh water springs offer different flavours of enjoyment. On the Calle San Miguel you will a flour-grinding windmill which dates back to Arab times. La Carihuela, an old village having fishing as its main occupation allows tourists to see simple small houses usually decorated with bougainvillea. Some of the original cottages are still found to exist. It offers splendid views of the sea and interesting rock-formation. This area is reputed for its fine restaurants and beach bars.
Industry:
With the development of resorts and hotels Torremolinos has grown into an impressive tourist attraction over recent years. With a location 7km west from Malaga airport Torremolinos with its appealing set resorts and hotels provides a wide variety of nightlife, activities and entertainment. It has a large number of gift shops and boutiques. During the peak-summer season, the town mainly attracts young groups of tourists mostly enjoying the nightlife. In the off-season it is the outskirts and the suburban areas of the town that draws people into a friendly Spanish atmosphere for spending their weekends.
Gastronomy:
With international restaurants exceeding 250 in number offering Japanese, Chinese, Indonesian, American, Scandinavian, English, German and Italian cuisine tourists are given a wide range of choices to choose. One should try out the general dishes of the Andalucia menu and those of Costa del Sol.
The beach bars/restaurants known as "Chiringuitos" provide visitors with local cuisine such as fried delicacies known as "pescaito frito", which is the trademark from late 1950’s in Carihuela and has now become a typical meal for visitors to the Costa del sol.
Vinegar, garlic, tomatoes, olive oil are the local ingredients with which gazpacho, salt baked fish, sardines, shellfish soup, coquinas (small clams) and paellas are made. Fish along with "ali-oli" (i.e. garlic mayonnaise), "el adobo" (fish first marinated and then lightly fried) and bell pepper salad are some recommended dishes of Malaga. "Tortas de aceite de Torremolinos" is a typical desert of this place which is a must.
Nightlife:
Torremolinos is known for its most lively nightlife on the southern Spanish coast with many huge dance halls, clubs, and disco bars. Calle San Miguel with La Bodega as a prime meeting place provides a wide range of cheap tapas in its Spanish bars with Bar Central Plaza giving the option of some good snacks and cocktails under a covered terrace styled in the French way. Avenida Palma de Mallorca’s Fun Beach, popular for being the largest disco with swimming pool, several dance floors and waiting staffs serving in swimsuits is the place to party hard after dinner. Palladium, Oscars’s are other popular disco bars to check out. Morbos, Contactos and Abadia in La Nogalera are some of the gay bars with popularity. Hotel Torrequebrada in the Benalmadena resort is nice place to spend the night. The casino in the hotel has 15 tables for gaming with 34 slots remaining open the early hours of the morning. The hotel has 5 restaurants. It also holds live international flamenco and cabaret shows.
