Purullena is an agriculture town that is known mainly for cave dwellings and the local artisans who specialize in creating cobalt blue pottery. Many of these potters live in and sell the pottery from their homes.

 

With many historic events based in Purullena, history buffs will enjoy spending a day or two in the small town. A few more than 2,300 residents live in the town. It may be larger than other surrounding towns, but it is still small and offers only a handful of things to experience.

The remnants of Prehistoric burial sites have been found inside the border of Purullena. In the 1800s, the burial site was discovered and excavated. Many historic findings were discovered with the remains.

 

During the times of the Romans, the area was called Purulius. Mostly, they considered the area to be prime farmland thanks to the location of the Fardes River. When the Moors claimed the area, they made it a portion of Gaudix and constructed a large fortress with tall towers. Using portions of the Fardes River as a moat, they were able to keep invaders out with ease.

 

In 1489, Christians seized Purullena permanently.    The town became a place of importance to the Catholic kings who named it a Villa Real - literally translated as “royal city.”

Cueva Museo de Purullena is a delightful showcase of three cave homes that are located on the “Hill of the Immaculate One.” The cave dwellings feature period tools, cookware, and furnishings. It is not expensive for the family to tour all three homes and the surrounding land. The museum is open from 8.30 pm to 2.30 pm and again from 3.00 pm to 8.30 pm. 

The 16th century Mudejar architecture used to create the Parochial Church of San Martín draws many visitors. A huge brick bell tower reaches towards the sky. The Neogothic iron roof of the bell tower pleases the eye. Inside, the delightful altarpiece is signed by artists who helped create it. The caisson ceiling is another key attraction.

 

Be sure to visit some of the local artists. Many area artisans craft traditional blue and white pottery. They sell the pottery right out of their homes or in local open-air markets. You should not leave Purullena without some of this pottery as a souvenir.

Purullena is an agricultural town. Tourism does not play a significant part in the town’s economy, though there are some tourists who come into the area in the summer months. With two area restaurants, only a limited amount of revenue is produced by meals and lodging revenue.

 

Peaches are and probably always will be Purullena’s largest crop. In fact, the locals spend one day a year celebrating the peach harvest with their friends and families.

 

The remaining industry in Purullena revolves around the production of the famed blue and white pottery. The majority of these artisans resides in the cave housing and sells the pottery directly from their homes.

Purullenenses diets include many locally grown vegetables. Gachas Pimentonas is a rich stew made from tomatoes, red peppers, and spices. It is a commonly served, inexpensive meal. Snails and rice is another popular dish. Most meals are served with loaves of homemade bread.

 

For dessert, peaches tend to be the key ingredient. Peach trees thrive in the warm climate. Peaches can be baked or served fresh off the tree. One popular recipe simmers peaches in sugar and lemon juice. The peaches are simmered until the sugar has caramelized. Delicious!

 

Two area restaurants specialize in home-cooked, regional fare. Prices for a typical three-course meal are more than reasonable.

Purullena is a small community with no more than 2,700 residents. There are a handful of neighbourhood bars, but no true dance club. In reality, those coming to Purullena come for the tranquil days, warm climate, and friendly locals. For that reason, the bars that are scattered throughout the town will probably suffice. If you prefer a loud, boisterous disco, you will need to go to other cities.
