Introduction:

Chipiona is located in the heart of Costa de la Cruz. The area is well known for its iodine rich seawater. In addition, the warm weather helps turn the Muscatel grapes into ripe bites of heady sweetness. The extremely ripe Muscatel grapes are produced into amazing wines.
 
Chipiona is one of the area’s busiest seaside resort towns. Typically, the summer months bring a bustle of activity to the area. Tourists congregate on the beaches and in the streets.

History:

Chipiona is an area with many ties to the Romans who brought the town to life long ago. In the 2nd century, the Romans created a lighthouse to warn travellers on the Guadalquivir River of the many jagged reefs in the area. Despite the warning system, many ships still crashed on the Salmedina Rock.
 
In 1251, King Fernando III and his armies battled for control of the area. Their attempt was successful. As time went on, the deed to the town was handed to the Ponce de León family. The area remained a summer resort to many members of royalty.

Site Seeing:

With an impressive yacht club bringing many boaters to the area, Chipiona’s waters can fill quickly with sailboats and water skiers. The area is packed with water sports. Watch for fishing charters to try your own hand at catching dinner.
There are four major beaches in Chipiona. Ballena Beach, Camarón-Tres Piedras Beach, Cruz del Mar-Canteras, and La Regala are all open to the public. The beaches are perfect for fishermen, sunbathers, swimmers, and those interested in a variety of water sports.
Head to Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la O for a look at a 15th century church. Other area churches include Ermita del Cristo de la Misericordia (built in the 20th century) and Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Regla (constructed in the 15th to the 20th centuries.) The Santuario is next to the Roman lighthouse. Be sure you view this incredible example of Roman construction.
There is a good mix of hotels, inns, and hostels in Chipiona.   Even considering your budget, you’ll be surprised with the range of options.

Industry:

Chipiona’s lush farmlands are filled with grape vines. The hot sun brings incredible sweetness to the grapes that then produce amazing wines.
 
The other key industry is fishing. Because of the warm waters, many fish congregate in the sea providing fishermen with tremendous profit. Seafood is then shipped to other areas or sold in the local fish markets.

Gastronomy:

Seafood is plentiful in Chipiona, therefore much of the area’s cuisine focuses on the abundance of fresh fish, shellfish, and crustaceans. Many dishes utilize local produce. Tomatoes, peppers, asparagus, garlic, and olive oil are often used with the seafood. One area specialty mixes fresh fish with potatoes, garlic, olive oil, tomatoes, and herbs and then it is slowly baked in the oven. Delicious!
 
A number of area restaurants allow patrons to choose their own seafood and then the chef cooks it to order. You have not lived until you’ve picked your own fish and had it grilled fresh out of the salt water!

Nightlife:

During the fall and winter months, nightlife in Chipiona is not as impressive as in the summer. Off-season you can find a nice selection of bars, some serve tapas. It is highly recommended that you sample the area tapas.
In the summer, tourists flock to the seaside resort town. Bars open their doors to the crowds. Outside patios fill quickly with people of all ages. Some bars open up their dance floors, mostly populated by the younger adults, and all provide an incredible meeting spot. It is hard to leave Chipiona without having gotten to know a few locals and even some tourists.

Seafood is exquisite in the town of Chipiona.  Anyone with a passion for shellfish, saltwater fish, and crustacean will be delighted by the food served in Chipiona.   Summer months bring heat, but the cooler water of the sea is extremely refreshing.  Chipiona is a town for those who enjoy many sensations.  Sights of the ancient monuments offer amazing photographs.  The salty air of the ocean blends with local flora creating lovely smells.  Feeling the cold water and the hot sun will make your skin tingle with pleasure.  Finally, the taste of the freshest seafood will leave your mouth watering!
